2013 Policy Priorities

As Virginia's oldest faith-based advocacy organization, we have worked with and through the faith-informed community on a range of social justice issues since our founding in 1982. Each year we survey our members to determine what issues members are interested in and what they are willing to work on. The poll also helps us allocate our limited staff resources efficiently and gives us a sense of how we’re meeting the expectations of our members.

The poll results this year affirm our overall mission – to stay steadfastly committed to a more just and compassionate Commonwealth. Members indicated that they are most concerned about issues contributing to and stemming from poverty and hunger. While this category was the greatest priority for our members, it was closely followed by access to health care and effective implementation of the Affordable Care Act. Additional priorities include the healing of God’s Creation and protection of at-risk youth. This year we also asked our members to identify and prioritize issues within those broad categories, the results of which are reflected in this brief.

A full overview of our 2013 priorities can be found here. Follow the links to the right to learn about our position on the issues, our plan for progress, and how you can get involved.

The Virginia Interfaith Center also advocates on federal policies related to the reduction of poverty. The Center is the Virginia affiliate of the Half in Ten campaign, working to reduce national poverty levels by 2021. The Campaign's preliminary report can be found online here.
