Education Opportunities for All
We believe that punishing children for their parent’s circumstances is both unethical and un-American, and we oppose policy initiatives that seek to blame and punish children for being undocumented. We will continue to support policies that foster the growth of these children into responsible and productive legal citizens. By teaching American immigrants English and preparing them to be contributing members of our workforce, we can build a stronger economy and secure a productive future for all Virginians. Last year multiple bills were introduced that would have banned undocumented immigrant children from being admitted to public state colleges and universities, and to require elementary schools to record those children whose parents could not produce their birth certificate at the time of enrollment. The second was a blatant affront to our constitution as upheld by the Supreme Court. The Center will continue to work to defeat these, and other, bills that seek to victimize and ostracize those children who are in this country through no fault of their own. As faithful advocates we seriously head the call to “welcome the stranger among us” and will continue to advocate for justice for all people.
