RICHMOND
The Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy is adding its voice to the debate over uranium mining.

The director of the center's Interfaith Power and Light program said she'll announce the center's position today on uranium mining and Virginia's 1982 moratorium. Director Trieste Lockwood said she'll discuss the risks and benefits of lifting the ban.

Virginia Uranium Inc. wants to tap a 119-million-pound uranium deposit in Pittsylvania County. The Chatham company says mining will create hundreds of well-paying jobs and help the U.S. move to energy independence.

Environmental groups have questioned the impact of mining and milling on Virginia waterways and local residents.Virginia Uranium could seek to end the moratorium as early as the 2012 session of the General Assembly.
