RICHMOND – The Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy joins our fellow organizations today in calling on Governor Terry McAuliffe to veto the anti-sanctuary legislation (HB2000), the detainer bill (HB1468), and not to sign off on any new 287 (g) agreements related to federal immigration enforcement.

The recently passed legislation out of the General Assembly addresses a problem that does not exist, namely cities and towns refusing to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement. More important, these bills are contributing to a spirit of fear and dread on the part of Virginia’s immigrant population.

“Virginia is for lovers, and loving our neighbors is part of who we are as Virginians,” said Kim Bobo, Executive Director of the Center.

The Virginia Interfaith Center is ramping up efforts to engage the faith community in efforts to oppose discrimination against our neighbors due to their faith, race or immigration status.

VICPP agrees with the ACLU in asking Gov. McAuliffe to “make clear to the public that the Commonwealth of Virginia will not accept voluntarily the responsibility of the federal government” in enforcing federal policies.
