The Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy (VICPP), together with faith leaders, congregations, and volunteers from across the Virginia, advocates for a variety of social justice issues at the Virginia General Assembly in Richmond.

Founded in 1982, VICPP has a long history of engaging people of faith to work to make Virginia a better and more just place for everyone. We are proud of our history advocating at the General Assembly and are thrilled that we’ve been able to play a role in some legislative successes that have benefited Virginians.

2020 was a watershed moment for the advocacy efforts of the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy. While we’ve been effective change makers at the General Assembly for decades, including helping to expand Medicaid, we finally were able to make tremendous progress in 2020. Legislative victories in 2020 were numerous and were excited to add more in 2021. A few of the key legislative priorities we led or helped on include: strengthening wage theft laws, reforming predatory lending, raising the minimum wage, securing driving privileges and access to in-state tuition for immigrants, codifying the environmental justice council, creating the environmental justice act, joining the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), and much more. After so many years of fighting for a better Commonwealth, it was incredibly exciting to help get so many laws passed to do just that!

Past Legislative Highlights

In 2019, we helped pass two pieces of legislation to help prevent workers in Virginia from losing their wages. Learn more about what we worked on in 2019 here.

In 2018, we played an integral role in helping pass Medicaid expansion, which secured health care for over 400,000 Virginians. This successful passage of this legislation is one of the greatest legislative achievements for Virginians in a long time. We took the lead in making sure the faith community was heard across Virginia and that that message was brought to Richmond at the right time. Learn more about what we worked on in 2018 here.
