Opportunities for Congregational Members
The Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy consists of thousands of individual, congregational, organizational and judicatory contacts dedicated to social justice. Faith communities from across Virginia are united through the Center and work to create a more just and compassionate Commonwealth. Members come from across the state and participate in activities of the Center that appeal to their call to advocacy. Following are various opportunities for your congregation:
LEARN.
Host and make available to your congregation invaluable advocacy and issue trainings to give your members and avenue to take their faith into action. Contact the office for the latest hot issues!
Invite your entire membership to attend a “Day of all People of Faith” at the General Assembly and “Social Justice U” events.
Have the center set up discussions with your local legislators at your house of worship to learn about their faith and how it impacts their policy decisions. We will even make the contacts for you!
Use Interfaith Center bulletin inserts to share facts about social justice issues with your entire congregation. For instance, try this one out dealing with minimum wage - (.pdf download - WageBulletin).
Open up inter-congregational dialogue with members of other faiths to gain a broader perspective on faithful advocacy as seen through the Abrahamic texts of Christianity, Islam and Judaism. We likely have great contacts with leaders of other faiths in your area and we are eager to help.
PRAY.
Host an interfaith prayer vigil.
Invite members of your congregation to pray or speak at events based on your scriptural teachings.
Contribute scripture and prayers to be distributed to all legislators every Monday, Wednesday and Friday of the legislative session.
Member Temples, Churches and Mosques serve as havens for social justice as advocated by the teachings of their sacred texts. Help make yours one today!
ACT.
Name a point person from your congregation to serve as a liaison to a local chapter. This person receives complementary individual membership from the Center and acts to help member congregations stay informed about upcoming Interfaith Center events. (Contact our Grass Roots Organizer for more information - 804-643-2474)
Share your events with other congregations locally and throughout the state by registering your events online through the Center’s database and notifying the local chapter in your area.
Receive updates of social justice events in your area that your congregation may want to co-sponsor or invite your members to attend.
Host and participate in advocacy events year round and use the center resources to network and coordinate with other faithful communities.
Beyond these opportunities for involvement, congregations receive advanced access to our online resources. We will post a link to your specific congregation on our website, publish contact information, and utilize our database of thousands of contacts to disseminate information relevant to the mission of the Interfaith Center.
Member congregations enjoy the connections they make with other faith communities and the numerous avenues they receive to share their passion for social justice. Join Us today!
