CHOOSING YOUR ISSUE

Good Information Makes A Difference

More than likely, you will find more information about your issue than you could ever possibly use. Facts and statistics abound. One out of four children does this or, 75 percent of children do that. How do we look at these numbers and issues and make sense of them? Discerning between good and bad information is crucial to effective advocacy.

Nothing will impede your advocacy work like passing on bad information. Legislators will learn very quickly not to trust you or take your work seriously.

So what is bad information, and what is good information?

Bad Information…

  1. is based on anecdotes or guesses
  2. is based on faulty statistics
  3. is unclear and/ or sensationalized
  4. is outdated information
  5. includes statistics without a source reference

Good Information…

  1. states solid facts
  2. includes annotated statistics that can be understood
  3. is up-to-date information (for most issues this is within a year)
  4. cites stories as personal
  5. states clearly who is responsible for information
  6. uses few acronyms (whenever used, the whole name can easily be found in the beginning)
  7. states specifically and clearly what you want the legislator to do or what position you are taking
  8. uses statistics which correlate to each other (apples to apples)
