Using Phone and E-mail for Advocacy
How it works
Track key legislation through the weekly Legis-Link and other legislative alerts.
When an important piece of legislation needs advocacy, the first person on the Technology makes his/her calls to the appropriate persons.
When the message reaches the last person on the tree, s/he contacts the original caller to close the loop.
Talk to clergy, lay leaders, and group
Following through
Person #1 on the technology tree is responsible for checking Center fax/email alerts, visiting Center on the Internet (http://www.virginiainterfaithcenter.org) and/or calling the Center Hotline (804.643.2574) or on a regular basis to track where legislation stands in the legislative process. This information becomes the central message to be passed down the tree.
All members should have a copy of the technology tree with phone numbers/email addresses for all participants.
The last person on the list should receive two contacts from both sides of the tree. If the last contact person hears the message from only one side, s/he should call up the other side to check where it broke down.
Gratefully accept whatever support is given, remembering that all persons do not share your same passion for the issues most dear to you. Resist judgments, and be patient with each contact you make.
Getting started
Check with leaders before going ahead. You may want to use office supplies, copier, phones, etc.
Make use of public announcement opportunities when available: bulletins, poster boards, and announcement slots in services.
After making public announcements, approach individuals personally about becoming a part of the technology tree.
When receiving the advocacy message, a participant should respond by informing the caller what action s/he will take, either a visit, a letter, a fax, etc.
Each person’s advocacy efforts should be shared with the tree at large on a regular basis.
Catching up with other tree participants should be fun and interesting. Make a point to hold potlucks with a speaker, a film and followed by a discussion, etc. as often as possible.
The tree works best when it is regularly used even when issues are non-crucial. Problems with the tree are easier to resolve during less busy periods.
Pass on the message as accurately as possible.
Keep Information as Accurate as Possible. Design an email/call tree so that at least one person contacts the initiator so that you are clear the message made it through the chain.
