Health Care Issues

Undergirding everything else is the belief that health care is a right, and that therefore a just health care system in the United States is one which will provide coverage for health care for all.

To achieve these objecties, we work closely with these organizations:
National Coalition on Health Care, a major coalition of business, labor and faith community groups whose honorary chairs are former Presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter.

Universal Health Care Action Network (UHCAN), a nationwide grassroots organization in whose Faith Project we participate.

...as it is unconscionable that any human being should ever be denied access to adequate health care due to economic, racial, or class barriers; and The United Methodist Social Principles state in the introduction to paragraph 162, "The rights and privileges a society bestows upon or withholds from those who comprise it indicate the relative esteem in which that society holds particular persons and groups of persons . . . .", and in ¶ 162C, ". . .Children have the rights to food, shelter, clothing, health care. . . .", and in ¶ 162T, "Health care is a basic human right. . . . It is unjust to construct or perpetuate barriers to physical wholeness. . . . We also recognize the role of government in ensuring that each individual has access to those elements necessary to good health."

The concern of The United Methodist Church for health is rooted in our biblical understanding that salvation embraces wholeness of mind, body, and spirit. Jesus revealed the meaning of divine love in his acts of healing for all and the meaning of justice in his inclusion of all persons in the healing and saving power of God. The redemptive ministry of Christ, which focused on healing and wholeness—spiritual, mental, physical, and emotional—is our model for health ministry.
