HOUSING AND HOMELESSNESS SOCIAL STATMENTS - UNITED METHODIST

Housing and Homelessness

http://www.umc-gbcs.org/issues/resolutions.php?resolutionid=114

The lack of available and affordable housing leads not only to economic hardship and instability but also to a sense of hopelessness among families and individuals who must live without the security and well-being that comes with a home to call their own.

All persons are equally valuable in God’s sight. When persons are denied access to or opportunity for decent housing, their humanity is diminished. Housing may be understood to be the means of preserving and protecting the human body, which is characterized by the apostle Paul as the temple of God.

A dwelling place becomes an inherent part of God’s design for the creation in which human beings are an important part. Housing may be understood to be the means of preserving and protecting the human body, which is characterized by the apostle Paul as the temple of God.

God’s vision of the new creation for human beings includes the affirmations to the effect that [all persons] shall live in the houses they build (Isaiah 65:21), and even the birds and foxes have places that they call their own (Matthew 8:20).
