PREDATORY LENDING SOCIAL STATMENTS - UCC
Predatory Lending
http://www.ucc.org/justice/plend.htm
But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare. Jeremiah 29:7
We are a community interconnected. When someone is harmed or preyed upon intentionally in our community, it directly and indirectly impacts all of us. This happens in many areas of our society, but it is most prevalent in the consumer lending market, where people access capital/credit for homeownership, home improvement, loan refinancing, and loan consolidation.
Consumers depend on loans to obtain the dream of owning their own home. However, the most important lending issue today is no longer just the denial of or access to credit, but rather the terms of credit. Predatory lending occurs when lenders unscrupulously set loan terms that strip wealth from the borrower. The communities that fall prey to predatory lending consist predominantly of elderly, low and moderate income, and minority homeowners. There are many obstacles to obtaining safe, affordable, decent housing. Now there is a new threat that seeks to strip the wealth from the vulnerable of our society by way of predatory lending.
The United Church of Christ General Synod believes that "it is an appropriate activity of government to establish laws to preserve and improve the common good, including laws to protect consumers..." (GS XXI)
