Tax Equity
Reform Virginia's antiquated and regressive tax code.
- Virginia's tax code, basically set in 1926, had its last significant update thirty years ago.
- The lowest 20% of Virginians pay 10.4% of their income in state taxes, the upper 1% only pay 4.6%.
- Buy fertilizer, pay sales tax; have a lawn service, no sales tax. Buy detergent, pay sales tax; use a laundry, no sales tax.
- Cities can add tax for meals, amusements, and accommodations, Counties cannot.
- The state is not paying its bills: e.g. over $600 million owed to localities for education.
We will support:
- Providing revenue to adequately fund health care and vital human services.
- Fair share income tax brackets.
- Targeting and limiting credits, exemptions, and deductions.
- Providing additional revenue sources for localities.
- Extension of sales tax to services.
- Abolition of sales tax on food.
